I want to update this review as I have moved down to Atlanta and being home for the holidays, I returned to Cannelle to explore their new bakery items.

Since being in Atlanta, I have tried many different bakeries, especially ones offering French pastries, and Cannelle is still within my top three favorite French cafe/bakeries.  I stopped in and selected four decadent desserts - Raspberry mousse cake, Lemon cake topped with Strawberries & Cream enrobed in a ruby chocolate, a pistachio cake topped with a pistachio cream & nuts, and a giant blueberry macaron.

Even coming in the early afternoon, these pastries were extremely fresh.  The fruit in all the desserts was very fresh, the macaron even had fresh blueberries in the cream filling.  My personal favorite was the pistachio cake dessert - all the cakes are soaked in a syrup, making them extremely moist and with just the right amount of flavor.

This will always be one of my first stops when I am back in town for a delicious French pastry.

I admit it - I am a pastry snob. I love seeing rows upon rows of beautiful, fussy desserts with mounds of cream swirls and dashes of chocolate pearls. I linger over pastry cases the way others may covet a shiny car or brilliant jewelry. I might be that person who orders several pastries in one sitting. It's not just me; it's an affliction that runs in the family.

Last year (or maybe the year before that), I stopped by this shop and was disappointed by a near-empty pastry case; I vowed to return when there was more choice. The photos on Yelp reassured me that this was not the norm.

I did return on a recent Sunday. Guests were lingering over their coffees and snacks and enjoying a lazy afternoon. Another guest and I stood by the counter and waited to place our orders. And waited. And waited. We looked at each other uneasily. Made the kind of small talk people make when they're talking to strangers. And waited some more until one of the many employees finally decided to help us. Service - poor.

I ordered a chocolate éclair, one of three kinds available that day, a brûléed flan, and a pistachio/raspberry macaron. Yes, (sigh) carbs. The éclair pastry did not have the crisp shell that I would have liked. Instead, it was soft and slightly soggy. The flan tasted rubbery along the edges and did not have a creamy center. The pistachio/raspberry macaron was perfect though, a perfect balance of sweet and tart on crisp, flavorful shells.

So sadly, this is not the place for me. I do intend to try the new-ish Detroit location by the same owner. I miss having access to great patisseries.

Cannelle Patisserie is THE place to go for French breads and pastries. Everything is fresh and delicious. The place has expanded to include more seating so you can sit and relax while sipping on an espresso and munching on a Pain au Chocolat, Almond Croissant, or one of their other fine pastries.

As westsiders, we were pleasantly surprised to find Cannelle's booth at the Farmington Farmer's Market during the summer months.  The pastries are as fresh there as they are in the store so it's worth stopping by.

If you want to taste authentic French baking, check out Cannelle Patisserie.

I've heard about Cannelle for so long and I finally made my way over to the Birmingham location on a brisk Sunday morning with my mom. She and I love fresh, French pastries so we were so excited to try this place! It is so cozy on the inside that I wish we would've stayed to enjoy our goodies. We ordered what seemed like one of everything and that still didn't seem like enough. We got 10 things I think for a little under $30. Honestly, what I remember the last from our bunch were the croissants and the canelés--SO YUM!! That first bite into my croissant was pure heaven. I don't live in Michigan anymore, but told my mom we are obligated to come here whenever I'm in town. If you love close enough to go often, you're a lucky one!

Such a cute bakery! It's a little hard to locate (hidden behind a quite sad-looking Jet's Pizza) but a step inside and my first reaction was, "wow, this is so cute and nice." We were greeted by a friendly, smiling old man who was happy to answer our questions.

I got one of the sandwiches, which was good, but I was really blown away by the almond croissant. My friends and I got one... then another. The outside was crispy, and the inside was soft and so appropriately sweet.

Service is also top-notch here. Even though it is a order-at-the-counter style bakery, they will still warm things up and bring them out to serve to you, and come around to see if you need more water, etc.

    Love Cannelle!
